The CD Mirror Cube Trick

Put those AOL CDs to use by turning them into a
'boss early warning system'.

My desk is in a typical cubical in a typical office.  I am lucky though because my boss and coworkers can only approach my office from one side since the hallway outside my cube dead ends.

I discovered a simply way to monitor who is approaching my cube by using mirrors.  Of course I can't actually hang mirrors on my cube walls because that would look a little suspicious.  I can however hang CDs.  People may think I'm a little strange or dorky, but that'll only keep people from hovering behind me and that's a good thing.

I have a laptop and a PC on my desk.  I use the laptop to "test" sites I make on the PC to ensure they look right on another computer.  I also use the laptop for personal email, surfing the web, monitoring my personal websites, etc.  So of course I'm only really concerned about people popping into my cube when I'm using my laptop and I hung the CDs accordingly.  One is on the wall above the laptop and the other is on the wall behind it and facing the hallway where my boss approaches.

I'll supply a diagram soon.

Privacy Screens

Reduce glare and make your screen unviewable to people standing over your shoulder or beside you.

Privacy screens are a great way to protect your privacy at the office because they distort the images and text that shows on your monitor if you aren't sitting directly in front of it.  This means that a snoopy coworker won't be able to sneak up behind you and read over your shoulder.

Another feature of the a privacy screen is that it reduces glare and filters the radiation that comes from your monitor.  This makes a great excuse because your boss may ask you why you have a privacy screen.  You can just tell him her that you bought it to reduce the glare that's been hurting your eyes.  If he asks you to remove it you can always use it at home and you may be able to get your boss to buy you a traditional anti-glare screen in the process.
